Bouquets of newly sharpened pencils

I love fall. What a cliche, but it's true. I grew up in New England, spent 20 years in the Midwest, and am now in California. Fall looks different, but the vibe is the same. Even at age 49 and no children my brain is stuck on an academic calendar and newly purchased school supplies. I am much more likely to come up with goals and to dos in September than I am in January.

So here I am, starting a blog in 2022. I'm forever several years behind the cool kids.

My intention is to track my reading, but as I tend to remember books I've read in terms of what was happening in my life at the time, it will include tidbits from my day-to-day as well.

I know myself well enough to know why I am starting this now: baseball and tennis are basically done for the next couple months so my available reading hours have increased. Thank goodness I don't care about basketball or football or I'd never read another novel again.

For many years I have have been a lurker on book blogs. I truly admire and in awe of those of you who have busy lives yet still manage to get so much reading done. I've learned to be a bit more forgiving of myself when it comes to reading goals. I'll never read it all. I'll never enjoy it all. Setting lofty goals makes it feel like an assignment. And so...I relax. If I don't like something after 50 pages (or 25%), I set it aside. If something grabs my eye and sparks my interest, I'll have multiple books going at once. The only thing I DO know is there's no wrong way to live a reading life.

Here we go. Happy Sunday and happy chapters ahead, friends.
